Bachmann Bio
Michele Bachmann was born in Waterloo, Iowa in April, 1956 and moved to Minnesota as a child. Bachmann and her family live in Stillwater where they are members of a Lutheran Evangelical church. After graduating from high school, Bachmann received a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and English. She then went on to earn law degrees from Oral Roberts University and the College of William and Mary.
Her parents were democrats and as a young adult Bachmann worked on the campaign for Jimmy Carter. It was then that she met her husband Marcus.
Marcus Bachmann runs a Christian counseling center in the St. Croix valley area. He has a master's degree in counseling from Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and a doctorate in clinical psychology from the Union Institute & University in Cincinnati.
Her experience working on the Carter campaign sparked a change in her political affiliation and she switched to the Republican Party. Its party platform was more in keeping with Bachmann’s emerging conservative right wing views.
Bachmann got her political feet wet when she ran for a school board position in 1999 which she lost. Only a year later she trumped the Republican nomination for state senator and won. Bachmann served two terms during which she repeatedly tried to amend the state constitution to ban gay marriage, or any type of gay union. In 2006, Bachmann defeated Democrat Patty Wetterling to win an open seat in Minnesota's 6th District.
Bachmann and her husband, Marcus, have five children and have cared for 23 foster children over many years. In Congress she is admired by both parties as a leading advocate for foster and adopted children.
